What is PCI DSS certification?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is an information security standard for organizations that handle branded credit cards from the major card schemes.

Who manages it?

The PCI DSS protocols are administered and managed by the PCI SSC, an independent body that was established by the major payment card brands: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB. The payment brands and acquirers are responsible for enforcing compliance.

Is there a difference between PCI DSS Compliant and PCI DSS Certified?

Yes. Often times PCI DSS compliance is misunderstood as PCI DSS certified.

For a PCI DSS compliant software, it means the software has been developed as per the standards and undergone self assessment questionnaire of the governing body.

PCI DSS Certified Assessed by certifying agencies
